David Bowie’s new video is the least subtle comment on religion ever

There’s a ton of amazing talent in David Bowie’s music video for “The Next Day”: Bowie, for one, but also Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard, reunited after The Dark Knight Rises. But the video itself is a dismally on-the-nose, been-there-done-that critique of organized religion. NSFWish for breasts and blood.

(Edit: As one commenter notes, the “organized religion” here is Catholicism specifically.)

There’s definitely some cool imagery happening in the video—especially dig the creepy eyelashes. But the greedy, lecherous priest and cardinal? Bowie as the messiah? Our priest screaming at the messiah over the stigmata? Not terribly interesting. It could have been a bit less obvious, a bit more inventive (and it felt like it was trying a bit too hard to be shocking without actually being shocking), though we do sort of love the way Bowie pops out at the end.
