DoCoMo’s N900iL Wi-Fi phone looks like it gets it right—it uses the DoCoMo 3G network by default, but can switch to SIP Voice-Over-IP calls when within range of a Wi-Fi network. It’s not clear, exactly, if the NEC-made, Linux-powered phone can use just any old Wi-Fi network—and I suspect not— or if it must rely on special software running on a private intranet. Still, for business users, VoIP built into handsets makes total sense, especially when the VoIP calls offer extended features, like showing other users’ status information and greater battery life.
And of course, the 2-megapixel camera for upskirt shots (or in more progressive offices, the upslack shot).
