Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is gearing up to film in New Mexico, and Friday’s edition of The Albuquerque Journal included a major spoiler innocuously tucked away in a random paragraph.
This article, which comes courtesy of AICN, reveals that the Avengers will be battling the Kree and Skrulls, two alien races who are perpetually at each other’s throats and whose exploits were at the center of a classic Avengers storyline. (Incidentally, this line only appeared in the print edition of the Journal.)
Of course, Skrull participation in the film has been bandied about for a while now, so it’s unclear if the writer is rehashing old rumors or confirming that these alien races (and their eternal enmity) are the villains of the piece. Of the two races, the Kree tend to be portrayed in a more positive light, but I could see Whedon putting a twist on this old rivalry to explode fans’ expectations.
