Paralives is a life simulation game in the vein of The Sims series. In this open world, players must manage the daily lives of characters called Parafolks. The game even includes a building system so you can construct your houses as you like.

About Paralives

Have The Sims finally found a real competitor? Although it was released on the down-low, Paralives is becoming a true phenomenon in the video game world. In just a few weeks, the game from the Quebec-based studio Paralives has sold over 900,000 copies—which is absolutely staggering. Other underdogs, like inZOI, have tried to challenge the Electronic Arts series, but The Sims remains decidedly unbeatable. With its fresh take, Paralives offers a solution that seems to perfectly address what fans of life simulators have been missing. In a sense, Paralives is simply like a fifth installment of The Sims—but with its own unique personality.

Modeled after The Sims series, Paralives is a life simulator that stands out thanks to one key feature: it’s an open-world game. What’s truly impressive is that it was developed by a small, ambitious team. Leading the project, Alex Massé gave his team the time they needed to craft every element of the game—from gameplay to art direction to the soundscape. By choosing to create a life simulator, they knew they would reach a broad audience. The Montreal-based studio’s crowning achievement has been providing regular updates to an active community that offers valuable advice. This has allowed Paralives to grow gradually, and today it’s holding its own against one of the industry’s giants.

Some video games stand out for their distinctive—and sometimes original—art direction. The Sims has succeeded in creating a unique visual style, with instantly recognizable characters. Paralives, too, pulls off this feat. The studio opted for a comic-book-style look, relying on a fairly advanced customization tool. This allows players to create Parafolks—or Para for short—who are capable of expressing genuine emotions. You grow attached to these characters and work to build a stable daily life for them, balancing home, work, and activities. The game also features a variety of events.

Why Should I Download Paralives?

Built on the foundations of life simulators, Paralives is a single-player experience where you can create everything from scratch and live the lives you want.

The game features an interface based on icons and menus. Right from the start, players can create their Parafolks using a customization editor. This editor is quite advanced and allows you to craft unique protagonists, each distinct from the others. You can choose their clothes, physical appearance, and personality traits. These personality traits should not be taken lightly, as they define who they are and how they react to everyday situations, whether pleasant or challenging.

Once this initial customization step is complete, the player can start developing the environment for their Parafolks. This is where the construction mode comes into play. It has one major difference from its competitors: there is no grid. Paralives eliminated the grid and offers a clean, open visual style. The basic principle remains the same as in all games of this genre: you draw your terrain, place elements, manage the layout, and so on.

The mouse gives you total control over the construction mode, whether it’s zooming, stretching the terrain, rotating elements, or many other actions. This lets you adjust the dimensions of your environment to suit your Parafolks. And the content of the game, which is still in early access, is genuinely impressive, with over 100 customization elements and no fewer than 300 objects. That gives you plenty to work with—especially since the development team has designed nearly 200 animations to bring a real sense of life to the game.

Once you’ve finished customizing and building the environment, you can dive into the heart of the experience: managing the daily lives of the Parafolks. Just like in The Sims, the goal is to keep them occupied, help them meet people, get them to work, offer them activities, and, of course, feed them and ensure they maintain proper hygiene.

The Paralives team offers accessible gameplay with very intuitive visuals. The menus aren’t complicated, the tools are well-designed, and anyone can jump into a game without feeling like they’ve been dropped in the middle of nowhere. Paralives has some real strengths to offer compared to The Sims, but you’ll have to be patient to enjoy the full experience, as the real release is slated for 2028. With animals and changing weather conditions in its sights, Paralives definitely has a bright future ahead.

Is Paralives Free?

No it is not free. Even though it's in Early Access, Paralives offers a fairly complete and worthwhile experience. The game is available only on Steam.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with Paralives?

Available in Early Access, you can download Paralives on Windows PCs and macOS. For now, it’s only available on computers, but the developers haven’t ruled out a future release on gaming consoles. Given its stratospheric success at launch, that would make sense, but it’s clearly not happening anytime soon.

What Are the Alternatives to Paralives?

It’s no coincidence that Paralives feels like The Sims series. It’s based on a philosophy similar to that of the Electronic Arts game, but with its own unique personality. In any case, if you like Paralives, The Sims 4 seems like the ideal alternative. With over ten years under its belt, it’s a powerful management game. Boasting an absolutely massive amount of content—thanks in large part to its expansions—the game’s base version is now available as free-to-play.

A kind of next-generation Sims, inZOI offers a visual experience that immediately stands out. Powered by the Unreal Engine 5, it’s a life simulator that features an open world with a wide variety of activities. Just like in The Sims, the goal is to customize your avatars, build an environment for them, and shape their daily lives. With a first-person perspective, inZOI offers a different approach to life simulation—one that’s more visual but no less engaging.

Let's finish up with a very cute game that offers a laid-back experience. If you enjoy a “chill” atmosphere, Tiny Life is an engaging game that breaks away from the usual management game standards. It's a small life simulator, played from an isometric perspective, inspired by the first installment of The Sims and offering gameplay focused on building. The whole thing is wrapped up in a delightful, colorful aesthetic. In terms of its mechanics, Tiny Life is reminiscent of games like Little Computer People, where you had to manage the daily life of a little character in a big house.
