GOALS is a soccer game that stands out from the rest on the market, led by EA Sports FC 26 and eFootball. As a free-to-play title, it offers an online arcade experience centered on timing, positioning, and spectacle. It’s a game tailor-made for esports.

About GOALS

Created by Andreas Thorstensson (Goals AB), GOALS is a free-to-play arcade-style football (soccer) game aiming to make its mark on the esports scene. In development for several years, this title is set to compete with the most famous football series, such as EA Sports FC and eFootball, the two giants from Electronic Arts and Konami. Available on Windows PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, the title focuses on dynamism, timing, and spectacular gameplay. Considered a next-generation soccer game, it features fast-paced matches in various arenas.

Like titles such as Rocket League or Rematch, it breaks away from traditional football simulations. Instead of aiming for hyper-realism and tactical depth, GOALS focuses on a much faster-paced, arcade-style gameplay experience based on timing and accessibility. To meet this challenge, the studio relied on three pillars: a custom physics engine, highly responsive controls, and exceptionally fluid animations designed to eliminate any downtime. Because yes, GOALS doesn’t bother with the clunkiness of traditional simulations: everything is designed for spectacle and fast-paced action, with a single goal: to score a lot and play game after game.

Although considered an underdog compared to the competition, GOALS is a fully developed project that arrives just in time for the 2026 World Cup. Available since June 4, 2026, it stands out for being free-to-play, much like eFootball, and for offering spectacular, accessible football tailored for esports competitions. It features gameplay that is entirely focused on online matches. Although solo training is available, the core of the experience revolves around multiplayer matches. Its philosophy is simple: have fun right away and challenge the best to become a virtual football ace.

Why Should I Download GOALS?

Developed by the Swedish studio Goals AB, GOALS is a completely free competitive soccer game that stays true to the free-to-play philosophy. It is the result of a team of over 70 people, brought together around a project led by Andreas Thorstensson, a former professional Counter-Strike player and pioneer of esports. Building on this experience, GOALS was bound to be an entirely online game.

In terms of gameplay, GOALS is an arcade football game currently available exclusively in 1-on-1 mode; however, the developers plan to add 2-on-2 and 5-on-5 modes in the coming months. You play solo against another online player and build up your team as you progress through each match. As for game modes, you can, of course, train and play a match against the AI to get the hang of it, but the bulk of the experience lies in the ranked mode, where you gradually climb a global leaderboard. Reward Points then unlock various bonuses to customize and expand your squad.

There’s also a Tournament mode, featuring a single-elimination bracket over four rounds, as well as a Knockout mode that opens only on weekends and brings together the world’s top 500 players, with increasingly enticing rewards as you rack up victories. Of course, beginners can practice their skills through quick matches or friendly games.

In terms of gameplay, it’s easy to pick up right away. There’s no downtime in the action, and the game properly rewards good decision-making. Because, yes, it all comes down to reading the game, positioning, and precise timing. And for those interested, there’s even a spectator mode, so you can enjoy matches without actually playing. And since good news never comes alone, GOALS offers full cross-play across all platforms: whether you’re playing on Windows PC, macOS, or console, you’ll be competing against the same pool of players. All you need to do is download the game from your preferred digital store, create a profile, and dive into the great adventure of soccer, GOALS-style.

Compared to the competition, GOALS is built on a completely different structure, starting with the lack of official licenses. Rather than featuring real players, the game uses procedural generation to create its athletes. Each player has their own unique stats. The idea is to make them progress over the course of matches to create a sense of rising power and motivate players to challenge the elite. To appeal to a broader audience, the studio has layered the “Originals” concept on top: these are influencers, streamers, or legends integrated into the game without any licensing restrictions. This allows the game to feature a few personalities without having to deal with powerful rights holders like FIFA.

Visually appealing, GOALS is powered by Epic’s renowned Unreal Engine 5. Now available in its final version, the game first launched in open beta on March 13, 2026, attracting over 260,000 players and generating several million matches. Thanks to their feedback, the studio was able to refine the gameplay and interface to deliver worthy content and, above all, matches of insane intensity, all with extremely responsive controls. Unreal Engine 5 notably enables the simulation of lively stadiums and highly detailed elements, whether in terms of player modeling, facial quality, or overall art direction. The stands are truly impressive, and the effects are no exception.

Is GOALS Free?

GOALS is a free-to-play game that offers in-app purchases. For now, these are strictly limited to cosmetic items and have no impact on gameplay whatsoever. So there’s no need to spend any money to have fun. GOALS clearly emphasizes that it is entirely free-to-play and bases its business model solely on customization. For now.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with GOALS?

GOALS is a game available for download on most platforms on the market. Available since June 4, 2026, it can be found on Windows PC—via the Steam and Epic Games Store digital stores—as well as on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Good to know: on Xbox, the game can be played either by installing it or via streaming through Xbox Cloud, which is available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers (Essential, Premium, or Ultimate).

What Are the Alternatives to GOALS?

Developed by Sloclap, the studio behind Sifu, Rematch is clearly one of the games that most closely resembles GOALS in spirit. With its arcade-style approach and dynamic gameplay, Rematch is like Rocket League, but with real soccer players. What sets it apart is that it borrows the concept from Libero Grande and requires you to control a single player on the field. With its close-up camera right in the heart of the action and its truly amazing feel, this title from the French studio is definitely worth checking out. For anyone looking for virtual football that's both fun and a bit challenging, the Rematch vs. GOALS showdown promises to be exciting.

Even though Rocket League puts players in the driver's seat of high-speed vehicles, it still stands out as the perfect alternative to GOALS. And for good reason: it follows the same philosophy, built around a fast pace, nonstop energy, action in every direction, and timing taken to the extreme. In addition to being fun, visually appealing, playable, and spectacular, it’s the perfect choice for get-togethers with family or friends. Between the dirty tricks, the laughter, and the plot twists, Rocket League is undoubtedly fun.

Finally, even though the game’s philosophy differs from GOALS, let’s make room on the field for EA Sports FC 26. A true titan of the competition, it remains a favorite among players, and its competitors will need a lot of courage to shake the Electronic Arts empire. Among the new features in EA Sports FC 26 is the introduction of dual gameplay modes: dynamic (arcade) and realistic (simulation). This allows players of all types to have fun, and the more spectacular mode could be an interesting alternative to GOALS. Everything moves faster, the game is less focused on tactics, and spectacular plays come one after another.
