While the standard chess set is of course a visual icon unto itself, we like seeing designers re-imagine the traditional board and pieces. Designer, architect, and competitive chess player himself Brent Blake’s electrified set is more interesting than most.

Brent’s set replaces the game’s pieces with varying lightbulbs—each color representing a different piece (with nondescript white bulbs as pawns, of course). The bulb pieces plug directly into the board, which supplies them with power—though not too much, so as to prevent burnt fingers.

When a piece is captured, it’s placed in a non-powered socket at the side, symbolizing its extinguished mortal flicker.

Just make sure not to knock the board over. [designboom]
