Animator Dillon Markey—who works for Robot Chicken and famous animation studio PESfilm—took an old Nintendo Power Glove, replaced the circuit board, added bluetooth connectivity, and transformed it into a cool animation tool. This short documentary explains how he did it:
Interesting! Now, as a software person, I would have started with the Power Glove, evaluating what each control input/output already did, and then wrote my own software to control the video software so that the animation software responded to those inputs. So basically a piece of middle-ware between the glove and the animation software of choice. The animator in this video though, he started by working with an electrical engineer to create a brand new circuit board and then made each button do what he wanted it to do so that it worked, presumably, directly with the animation software?
Although, as I think about this...he probably STILL had to have someone write the software that is controlled by his custom board, yes? So...I guess I am not understanding the reason for the custom circuit board when if he had to have custom software written anyway...why didn't he just take all the current Power Glove controls and just point their existing output circuits to whatever he wanted the software to do anyway?
I guess it a question of starting with your strengths and going from there. Or...mybe someone else could help explain why a custom circuit board was necessary here.
