Late last year lots of WiFi manufacturers jumped the gun a bit and started putting out wireless cards and base stations that adhered to the draft standard for 802.11g (a higher speed successor to 802.11b), knowing full well that the final standard could turn out to be substantially different. The inevitable result has loads of interoperability problems between 802.11g gear from different companies. Hopefully solving all these problems, the IEEE, which handles these things, ratified on a final standard for 802.11g today. If you’re an early adopter and already bought an 802.11g wireless card or base station, there’s a chance you might need to update its firmware to comply with the new standard.
