According to the New York Times, emergency workers at Fukushima are working to stop a new radioactive water leak from reaching the Pacific ocean. They are building barriers using sandbags and preparing water tanks for storage. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said his government is now in “a state of maximum alert (which begs the question: What other state they were previously in?).

Yesterday we learned that the water level was increasing, but according this appears to be a new leak. An unconfirmed report by ABC News—which was later corrected—initially said that there was radioactive water “pouring uncontrollably” into the ocean. This false extreme is what the workers at Fukushima are trying to stop from happening now.
