After you see Godzilla Minus Zero this weekend, the first thing you’ll want to do is watch it again. After that, you’ll probably want to know what happens next to the characters and creatures who may or may not survive. Writer-director Takashi Yamazaki feels the same way. He’s just not sure when that’ll happen.

“I would say it’s about fifty-fifty at this point,” Yamazaki told the Hollywood Reporter when asked if he’ll complete the trilogy. “I’m quite satisfied and happy with the current ending we have. It entrusts the interpretation to the audience in terms of how they want to receive it and what they want to walk out of theaters with. That being said, if Godzilla Minus Zero is my last Godzilla film, that would make me a bit sad. I do have other films lined up, starting with Grandgear and a few others, but at some point in my career, I would love to revisit Godzilla and see how we can expand this world.”

The bit we’re most intrigued by is “If Godzilla Minus Zero is my last Godzilla film, that would make me a bit sad.” No one wants to be sad. However, as he says, he’s already committed to his next film, Grandgear, a giant robot movie with Bad Robot that J.J. Abrams is producing (casting for which has already begun) Plus, he’s also developing some kind of mystery movie with Ridley Scott. So Yamazaki can basically do whatever he wants once his next film is done.

Considering Godzilla Minus Zero is almost certain to be the number-one movie in the world this weekend, though, and the film leaves itself wide open for more stories, we’d imagine the pull of a follow-up will be as powerful as a heat ray.

Godzilla Minus Zero is in theaters now. Yamazaki’s next film, Grandgear, is scheduled for release on January 14, 2028.
