Google’s Mysterious New Fitbit Just Got a Lot More Real

That mysterious, unnamed fitness tracker that appeared in some of Google’s marketing for the Pixel 11 is real and going to be released soon. Thanks to new leaked images and materials from Android Headlines, we now know the device, reportedly called the “Fitbit Edge,” is designed to sit between the screenless Fitbit Air and the more fully featured Pixel Watch 5, offering the health features of the former without all of the apps and smartphone-like qualities of the latter.

The new Edge images are consistent with what Google accidentally shared in its marketing. The device features a small, oval-shaped screen that offers enough room to display the date and time, two widgets, and what looks like a shortcut to a common workout type (in this case running). The fitness tracker is available in at least black, green, and orange color options, according to Android Headlines, though the fact that it features interchangeable bands suggests even more customization is possible. There’s also a large button on the side of the wearable, a sensor array that looks similar to the one Google shipped on the Fitbit Air, and smaller buttons on the back to release the Edge’s wristband. The whole package doesn’t seem quite as luxurious as a Pixel Watch, but it does appear more premium than older Fitbit devices.

Outside of its health features (which will presumably feed into the AI-powered Google Health Coach), the fitness tracker will reportedly be able to display notifications from a connected smartphone and run a few bespoke apps like Google Maps, YouTube Music, and Find My Phone. Interestingly, it also gets around seven days of battery life and is able to work with Android and iOS devices, just like the Fitbit Air.

For a rumored price of anywhere from $149 to $199, the Fitbit Edge could be a replacement for Fitbit’s original Charge lineup or its more expensive, smartwatch-esque Versa devices. Combined with the Air from earlier this year, the device makes it seem like Google is interested in reviving the Fitbit after several years of near dormancy. It seems unlikely the company will release the number of devices Fitbit had at its peak, but like the company’s phones, there could be a Google wearable for every price point. Screenless wearables have their charms, but some people really do like having a screen and aren’t willing to switch to Android or pay the increasingly high price of a Pixel Watch to get one. For them, the Edge—assuming Google does release it in October—could be a layup.
