Cosmopolitan asked Henry Cavill the all-important Superman question: Wonder Woman or Lois Lane? In his attempt to avoid taking a firm stand one way or the other, Cavill gave a horrible, horrible answer.
Cavill first opined on the “strong women” of comic books before being asked “Lois Lane or Wonder Woman.” Behold his answers:
POWER WOMEN ”Strong women are nothing new for the comic book world. I’m glad they are being represented a bit more in film and on TV. Wonder Woman has been around forever, she is an incredibly strong character. She can go toe-to-toe with Superman sometimes.”
SUPERMAN’S LOBSTER: LOIS LANE OR WONDER WOMAN ”This is a very long discussion because there are a lot of questions to be asked and answered. I mean who is better for a super-powered alien, a human or a goddess? Yes, the goddess can do all the normal things, which we would think are normal in a relationship, and not have any fear of Superman. But you also need to have that baseline of humanity, which Lois provides. And literally keeps his feet on the ground, keeps him down to earth. So that’s more of a debate than an answer.”
To be charitable to Cavill, we don’t actually have the questions that prompted these responses. Who knows what Cosmo asked? But, of all the things to say about Wonder Woman, perhaps the most famous female superhero, “she can go toe-to-toe with Superman sometimes”?
And, oh my god, what does Cavill think Superman’s base nature is if it’s so important that he have a love interest who can do “all the normal things” without being afraid of him? Like, should Lois be worried about that? The most charitable reading of Cavill’s statement is that he’s talking about the effect of superhuman sex on a regular human.
Ugh. Try to cleanse yourself of that image.
