Marvel’s Mutants are used to having a shitty time in the comics, and even at their most beloved there’s still a ton of prejudice and bigotry at play from the world around them. In The Gifted, things start out bad for our Mutant heroes—and then they quickly get worse.

Fox has just released the first six minutes of the pilot episode online, and while the main cast of the Strucker family are nowhere to be see, we do get to catch up with the show’s takes on some familiar mutants from the comics: Blink (Jamie Chung), Polaris (Emma Dumont), Thunderbird (Blair Redford), and then newly-created light-emitting mutant Eclipse (Sean Teale). Turns out they’re having a rough night, what with mutants being hunted down and dumped into prison.

We’ve seen a lot of this sequence in the various trailers for the show so far, but on its own it does a pretty good job at letting us see how The Gifted will handle the vastly diverse powers of its cast of mutants, and just how miserable a time they’ll be facing in the show. The answer? Extremely miserable.
