Isn’t it crazy to think Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is only a year old? Released August 1st last year, the film became such a cultural phenomenon that Rocket and Groot are now almost as recognizable as Captain America and Iron Man.

The movie has become so popular in fact, it feels like every single detail has been discussed ad nauseum. And while this particular detail has been discussed before, I’m pretty sure most people don’t realize it. I know it was news to me and it took some digging to find a few previous online mentions. Here’s writer/director James Gunn’s tweet from last week responding to the question “Why does everyone in GotG inexplicably speak English?”

It’s true. Look at the top image. “Enhancements: Translator Implant In Neck.” It’s one of those details that you don’t think about on a first watch, but after a few more times you may think, “Wait, isn’t it odd that these five different alien species all speak the same language?” And yes, it is. So they don’t. Gunn covered that in a very subtle, but important way. Well done.

As for what’s next for the Guardians, Gunn is currently writing and getting ready to shooting the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It’ll be in theaters May 5, 2017, filled with neck translator implants for everyone.
