Fantastic news for the handful of people who actually own a Zune. Someone's found a way to enable a sort of hard drive support, which although doesn't assign a drive letter to your Zune, does allow you to drag and drop files from it.

Turns out it's just a registry value to enable visibility in the shell. Cake! Hit the jump for the instructions.

1. Make sure your Zune is not plugged in and your Zune software isn't running
2. open up regedit by going to the start menu and selecting "run". Type regedt32 and hit "OK"
3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\
4. Search for "PortableDeviceNameSpace". This should be contained in the Vid_####&Pid_####\########_-_########_-_########_-_########\Device Parameters within the above ...\USB\ The ##'s listed here will be numbers and letters specific to your Zune
5. Change the following values:
* EnableLegacySupport to 1
* PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell to 0
* ShowInShell to 1
6. Plug in your Zune, and make sure the Zune Software starts up.
7. Hopefully at this point you can open up "My Computer" and browse your device, though it does NOT show up as a drive letter.

Right now I can access it both as a harddrive and sync through the Zune Software.

DISCUSSION

So I did that hack that lets you see your zune through mycomputer. Then I deleted all of my music off of my zune thinking that I would be able to just put it right back on through mycomputer in the order that I wanted. I was wrong, it will not let me add and music or pictures through mycomputer, only videos. To set everything straight, the reason that I did this in the first place was because when I first connected my zune it automatically streamed all of my music and then categorized each song with each artist - I have alot of one song per artist songs, and many different genres. This led to very, VERY long lists and I did not like it. Was there some sort of setting that I missed regedit? Or is there even a way to categorize your music the way you want it through the zune software?
