For years, HTC has been waging a senseless war against the 3.5mm headphone jack, dispatching wave after wave of Mini-USB-dependent handsets onto the public. But their newest, the Hero, has a proper plug. Was that… a concession? Yes, actually.

HTC brokered their surrender through MobileCrunch:

The vast majority of devices we launch after Hero will have a 3.5mm jack. Devices that we have already announced but that still come out after Hero will not necessarily be a part of this change.

In other words, from here on out, any HTC phone you might want to use as a media player will now be usable as a media player, without any kind of adapter. Sadly, this means nothing for folks who own/want to own the current generation of Android handsets, including the brand-new MyTouch 3G—you’re all going to have to struggle with those usb-to-3.5mm adapters that never stay put, ever, until the day you die. Or until you buy a new phone. [Mobilecrunch via Mobility Site]
