With the recent news that William Shatner has finally watched himself on Star Trek for the first time in forty years, I think we’re long overdue for another celebration of all things Shat. But this particular tribute to our favorite Canadian draws on powers other than his acting, mixing his version of Pulp’s “Common People” with the 1970s Filmation incarnation of Gene Rodenberry’s fantasy with alarming success. You’ll believe that pen and ink can “bust” a “move” under the jump.

It’s sad that it takes a fan-made mash-up to make a case for the existence of both Shatner’s singing career (Sorry, Ben Folds) and the short-lived Trek cartoon, but this is what happens when JJ Abrams lets his eye off the ball and focuses on things like “story” and “characterization”:

I can’t be the only one who secretly wanted someone to re-record the first line so that it was “She came from space, she had a thirst for knowledge,” right?
