At CinemaCon last night, between high-flying swings from Brand New Day and Beyond the Spider-Verse, and of course that wild Bloodborne animated movie news, Sony took a moment to return to the Further with our first look at the sixth Insidious movie. Like jumpscares and creepy old-people demons? Then friends, this is the trailer for you.
Putting the perils of the Lambert family behind it after 2023’s The Red Door, the latest Insidious film, Out of the Further (with Patrick Wilson handing over the director’s chair to series newcomer Jacob Chase, who also screenwrote) seems like it’s going to largely focus on new characters encountering the mysterious titular demonic realm.
Out of the Further stars Amelia Eve as Gemma, a young single mother who discovers one day that her bad dreams are actually the awakening of a power to tap into and visit the Further. Except, unfortunately for Gemma and her young daughter, she learns, much to her horror, that her powers don’t just let her go to the Further—they let her, whether she wants to or not, bring demons from there back into reality with her. Uh-oh!
How that mostly manifests in this first look is a lot of creepy, crotchety demons doing a lot of classic horror movie jumpscares—creepy legs suddenly appearing at the other side of the bed, heads popping out of places they shouldn’t be, and so on. That initial dentist chair jumpscare is pretty good, but everything else is pretty vanilla. Perfectly serviceable for a first look, but considering the mixed critical reaction to The Red Door, maybe the full film will have some grander spooks up its decaying sleeves.
Also starring Brandon Perea, and featuring Lin Shaye reprising her role from past Insidious films as series staple Elise Rainier, Insidious: Out of the Further hits theaters August 21.
