Intel chips that turn desktops into wireless base stations

Intel is working on a microchip that would let desktop PCs double as access points for wireless networks. It’s already possible to jigger a PC do something like this already, so I suppose the idea is to make this cheap enough and easy enough that most people wouldn’t need to bother buying a standalone wireless access point. On the other hand, the cost of 802.11b access points is dropping to near zero, so is this really solving a major problem?
