This Is Why You Don’t Peel Off the iPhone Duo’s Matte Screen Layer

A viral video shows how the iPhone Duo's nano-texture layer makes the foldable screen much more pleasant to look at than Android foldables.

Apple’s secret to hiding the crease on the iPhone Duo is a matte “nano-texture” layer on top of the inner display. It makes content on it look like paper and also greatly reduces reflections—I love it. The only downside is that colors are less vibrant and blacks are not as deep as on a glossy foldable screen like the one found on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8. Somebody has now peeled the nano-texture layer off an iPhone Duo, and the result is pretty hideous.

As seen in a video shared on X by user @UniverseIce, the iPhone Duo, removing the nano-texture screen layer makes the foldable display glossy, wrinkly, and uneven. It’s the complete opposite of what you want on a foldable display. If you need a PSA on how to make your $2,000 foldable iPhone worse, just watch the video.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Apple would offer nano-texture replacements for $19 for customers with AppleCare+. While you can basically go to Apple and ask for a new film any time you want for the small fee, you really don’t want to accidentally break your iPhone just because you wanted to see what a glossy screen would look like. No surprise, it looks bumpy! Just get an Android-based foldable if you want the glossy display.

The iPhone Duo is available this Friday, Oct. 23. Pre-orders started on Oct. 16, and all colors and storage models quickly sold out within minutes, with delivery estimates quickly slipping from October into late January 2027. If you try to order an iPhone Duo today in the U.S., Apple shows a delivery date estimate for Jan. 25. “The pre-order demand for iPhone Duo, our first foldable iPhone, has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Apple said in a statement sent to Gizmodo.

There’s no guarantee that there will be sufficient iPhone Duo supply on launch day, either. In the same statement, Apple said that it was “working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible” while also adding that it is “welcoming customers at Apple Stores worldwide to experience the iPhone Duo and the incredible full iPhone line-up for themselves.” The phrasing suggests only that Apple will have demo units for the iPhone Duo for customers to try out at Apple Stores, not that there will be enough stock for purchase.
