It’s Official: Sony Rep. Reveals PSP MP3 Playback

The headline may ring your duh-bell, because this was semi-announced at the Tokyo Game Show—but in fact, it wasn’t entirely “announced,” in the formal sense anyway. The news that the PSP would support MP3 came from the specifications sheet distributed during the Tokyo Game Show.

Not like it matters though, because as it turns out, this is official. In an interview with AV Watch, Mr. Izumi Kawanishi, director of Sony Computer Entertainment’s Network Systems Development department, confirmed this and a few other aspects of the PSP’s AV functionality. After the jump, of course.

He confirmed that the PSP will indeed support MP3 playback through its Memory Stick Duo slot, and transferring files over to any Memory Stick (even those without MagicGate) will be as simple as “drag and drop.”

But, there’s still no answers on the all-too-elusive battery life or video playback. As for supporting playback of user-created H.264 video (the PSP’s video codec), Mr. Kawanishi said “we are currently looking into it.” That doesn’t sound real promising, considering the PSP is still supposedly mere months from launch.

Not much other new information was revealed in the interview, but Mr. Kawanishi did say that “the PSP can be used while it is recharging.”
