Kong: Skull Island is just one piece of a larger puzzle in Legendary’s Monster Universe, and some new viral marketing hints that none other than John Goodman could play a larger role in the overall story. Unless he dies first.
The film recently unveiled its updated discoverskullisland.com website, which is now a “top-secret” research page for Monarch, the super-secret science group that debuted in 2014's Godzilla. These were the guys who were responsible for the M.U.T.O. getting access to all that tasty nuclear power before heading off to battle Godzilla in the middle of a city.
If you look in the upper-left corner of the site, near “Ark Record,” you see that Monarch’s supervising officer for the Skull Island mission is none other than William Randa, the character John Goodman plays. As of now, the only info we’d gotten was he was some form of “government agent,” but he’s clearly way more than that. He’s tied to Monarch, the same group from the first movie, and that hints Skull Island might not be the last time we see him. After all, how many monster movies dare to kill the beloved John Goodman?
The campaign has also been teasing out some password puzzles on Twitter for the website’s “secret sections,” which are basically Instagram videos with a creepy military-grade filter. They did give us our first live-action look at King Kong, which, as said before, we were shocked to find out is still a giant gorilla.
