Joss Whedon Would Return to Marvel to Direct a Superhero Movie Built Around Women

Joss Whedon is done with Marvel. After Avengers: Age of Ultron, the writer/director gladly stepped back from his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to do his own thing. But apparently there is something he would come back for: the opportunity to direct a female-driven superhero movie.

“Yeah, of course,” Whedon told The Wrap when asked if he’d be into directing a female-focused Avengers franchise. “Although I tend more towards the Jessica Jones-ey kind of stories than the delightful Supergirl stories that my daughter wants,” he said.

At present, Whedon’s full focus is writing an original screenplay about “a girl who goes through some unbelievable shit.” And no, he won’t be directing Captain Marvel, Marvel’s upcoming female-starring superhero movie. (Updates on that are coming soon.) Nevertheless, he’s very happy about that film coming.

“[Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige fought a mighty fight to get [Captain Marvel] on the schedule,” Whedon said. “So it’s a start. You could say that should be a middle, but it’s a start.”

Now, it’s important to note Whedon isn’t coming back for anything at the moment. He’s not even thinking about anything except his own screenplay. He’s merely saying, “Yeah, I’d be interested.” And if that’s the case, given he prefers a more “Jessica Jones-ey kind of story” then the potential Black Widow movie seems kind of perfect for him. She doesn’t even have the powers Jones has, just a troubled back story, an infectious confidence and a very cool world to play in.
