Karen Gillan and Katee Sackhoff teaming up for a movie about a haunted mirror

Soon enough, Karen Gillan’s time on Doctor Who will be over. But it looks like she’s not leaving genre fare behind, thank goodness. Gillan is starring in Occulus, a new horror movie from Absentia director Mike Flanagan. And Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff just joined the movie as a co-star. It sounds as though Occulus will be out in the summer of 2013.

According to Deadline, Gillan plays a woman whose family was destroyed by a horrible incident when she was a child, leaving her and her brother orphans. Her brother was blamed — but she believes a haunted mirror was the real culprit, and she’s determined to prove it. Sackhoff will play the mother of a younger version of Gillan’s character, presumably in flashbacks. So it doesn’t sound like the two women will be on screen together.

Occulus is based on a short film that Flanagan made in 2006, which won more than a dozen awards at film festivals. Here’s the trailer for the original short, which Brutal as Hell tracked down:
