Apparently not all of the phone companies have given up on fighting number portability. The United States Telecom Association and service provider CenturyTel asked the FCC to stop number portability from going into effect, arguing that since people will be able to switch a number from a landline to a cellphone, but not the other way around, it gives cellular carriers an unfair advantage over traditional phone companies. The FCC rejected their request, so they’ve filed for an injunction in Federal court. Seems unlikely they’ll be able to stop portability from happening, but you never know.
