Stephen Colbert is an enormous fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's works. Just look at his explanation of American politics using Lord of the Rings action figures or his challenging James Franco to a Tolkien debate. Colbert even owns Aragorn's sword, Anduril. So if any satirical political pundit deserves a role in Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, it's Colbert.
Colbert recently announced that he'd visited the set of The Hobbit leading many to speculate that Colbert might make a small appearance. Today, The Hollywood Reporter has reportedly confirmed that Colbert will have a cameo, although it won't appear in the first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Well, there goes my hope that Colbert might somehow appear in proximity to bear skin-changer Beorn. And it sounds like we'll have to wait a while before we find out if Colbert is at all recognizable in his cameo.
