While we might not know exactly where the upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake will end, we know where it’s going. A young woman named Pamela Voorhees, reeling from the death of her young son Jason, who drowned at Camp Crystal Lake, will take matters into her own hands, killing a bunch of people in the process.
The story in the show, which debuts on Peacock October 15, isn’t exactly the same as the iconic 1980s film, but the show’s star, Linda Cardellini, did want to pay respects to that film. Specifically, she wanted to pay respect to Betsy Palmer, the actress who first brought the murderous mother Pamela Voorhees to life.
“You can’t duplicate what Betsy did, which was to play this devoted mother,” Cardellini said at an event in Los Angeles this week. “So I can take that and sort of bring that to the early childhood years of Jason’s life. I also think that you don’t get to where Betsy is without really truly loving Jason and getting to know him. That was really important to us going in. And no, you can’t be another Betsy. But I do do a little bit of an homage with a certain sweater that makes an appearance.”
While it’s certainly cool that they’re bringing back the sweater (how could you not!), we’re more interested in that other sentiment about Pamela’s love for Jason and “getting to know him.” How much do we get to know the character who’ll eventually become one of horror’s most recognizable icons? Is the implication that we’ll get to see Pamela and Jason together as a family, which could help give context to any violent acts she might commit in the future? Seems plausible.
Everything we hear about this show has us scratching our heads but also infinitely intrigued. It’s been way too long since this incredible franchise had a major release and, hopefully, this gets the hockey masks flowing.
Crystal Lake debuts on Peacock October 15.
