We don’t know yet the plot of the Magic: The Gathering movie, based on the popular card game, or who any of the characters will be, but we finally have a headliner to attach to the project: Stranger Things and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping star Maya Hawke.
Deadline reports the Legendary and Hasbro collaboration from director and co-writer Matt Johnson (Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, Tony) will be an ensemble piece, but “Hawke’s role is expected to be a key one in the project,” and she was given “the first offer to join the film.”
Other plans to bring Magic to the screen include a TV component that will tie into the same universe as the movie.
“Launching the genre of trading card games in 1993, Magic: The Gathering has become a cultural engine with an expanding ecosystem of entry points that now spans streaming, digital games, publishing, consumer products, live events, and IP crossovers,” the trade writes. “The deep lore and welcoming community continue to captivate more than 50 million fans of all ages worldwide.”
In recent years, the Wizards of the Coast property (under the umbrella of Hasbro) has seen an uptick in crossovers with other popular fandoms, including WOTC’s own Dungeons & Dragons—a popular pastime among the Stranger Things characters, speaking of Hawke’s casting—as well as Lord of the Rings, Masters of the Universe, Star Trek, Final Fantasy, Marvel, and more.
