Margaret Atwood is famously averse to having her work (accurately) described as science fiction. But she’s happy enough to be called a “geek girl,” and to draw a comic for a new book called The Secret Loves of Geek Girls.
Secret Loves is being funded via Kickstarter, and it’s already pretty much reached its goal with 29 days left. Besides Atwood’s brand new comics “detailing her personal experiences as a young woman,” there are comics by Meaghan Carter (about first dates), Megan Kearney (about teens and “gothic romance bad boys”) and Bravest Warriors’ Kate Leth (about “kink.”) Plus superstars Roberta Gregory, Mariko Tamaki, Trina Robbins, and tons more.
That’s Atwood on the far left of the image above. As she tweeted, “I’m white-hair w. cat; pleased I have long legs at last.”
This project is the brainchild of Canadian comics publisher Hope Nicholson, who’s already successfully Kickstarted two other collections. Writes Nicholson:
I find myself very optimistic whenever I see an article on advice or information on geeks and dating. But soon this excitement turns to disappointment; the articles are almost always written with only the male geeks in mind… There is a desert of information geared towards the women in fandom. Yet when I get together with my friends at events or over drinks, one of our major topics is how we handle relationships and crushes, rejections, unwanted advances, and general romantic and sexual entanglements.”
