Stephen King’s epic book series The Dark Tower has been wandering around Hollywood for what feels like forever. First it was going to be a movie, then a TV show, then both, with multiple big names attached. And now, there’s yet another attempt in the works.

The Wrap first reported that Matthew McConaughey is circling a leading role in The Dark Tower, which is currently set up at Sony Pictures. Nikolaj Arcel, who did the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, is directing from a script by Akiva Goldsman. This first movie will primarily focus on the first book in King’s series, The Gunslinger.

So what role will McConaughey take? Variety says he was offered both the lead role of Roland, the heroic Gunslinger, and Randall, the villainous Man in Black and is leaning towards the latter. However, he just got the script and may still pass on the project.

Sony currently has a release date set for January 13, 2017 so this ambitious film will likely have to get going soon. If all goes according to plan, it’ll be the first film in a franchise that also includes a TV element. Details on how that’ll break down are still a mystery.
