This Microsoft patent describes a heads up user interface on windshields that shows useful information for the driver right where the eyes are. The patent takes information from cellphones, car stereos, your GPS, maps, weather, temperature, email, car instruments and probably the Zune, and places it your eyeline. Much more useful than taking a big ass table with you into the car. [Patent via Slashdot via Crave]
That's their Achilles' heel... their inability to see a new innovation and just lay off. They have to try and make their own version which misses the mark, because it focuses on locking you in, rather than empowering you in as many ways as possible.
If the new innovations keep coming rapod-fire like they have been (Google web-based apps, iPhone, Mac OS X, so much new stuff coming out every day) then Microsoft will eventually spread themselves so thin that they reach a breaking point. At that point, the fog lifts, customers see their options, and Microsoft products just don't cut it anymore.
I've always said that Microsoft has the infinite money cheat turned on. They can not be brought down from the outside, they will fall from within, like every truly great empire has done.
