Despite the corporate shake-up after Skydance finally acquired Warner Bros., DC Studios co-head honcho Peter Safran assures fans that their projects are still moving forward as planned. Case in point: we finally know who’s gonna star in the upcoming adult-animated series, Mister Miracle. You read the headline; it’s Josh Hutcherson.
Speaking with IGN, Safran gave the lowdown on DC Studios’ animated slate. Key among them is Absolute Batman, which Safran revealed writer Scott Snyder is currently working on the show’s script. While praising Tom King as a co-writer and producer on HBO Max’s Lanterns series, Safran revealed that Hunger Games alum Hutcherson and Terminator: Dark Fate star Mackenzie Davis would star in the Mister Miracle series as Scott Free and Big Barda.
“I think that Tom King really learned a lot in his season of co-creating and executive producing Lanterns and he adapted his book Mister Miracle fully on his own, wrote all eight episodes and I think it’s just dynamite. Josh Hutcherson as Scott Free and Mackenzie Davis as Big Barda,” Safran said. “And I just think it’s a book that I’ve always loved and I remember Tom telling us early on that, every convention he goes to, at least a couple people come up to him and say this book saved my life and I love that we got to tell that story over eight episodes. And it’s just a beautiful story about, ‘How do we survive in today’s world knowing that we’re never going to truly know the answers to the big questions in life?’ It’s a beautiful book and the adaptation is fantastic so we’re excited about that.”
According to the series’ synopsis, Scott Free is a world-renowned celebrity, best known as the greatest escape artist alive and married to Apokalyptan warrior Barda. When Scott makes “escaping death” his latest stunt, things go “horribly wrong” in his life, leading to a war between the worlds of Apokolips and New Genesis, after his adoptive father Darkseid has finally gotten his hands on the universe-altering power of the Anti-Life Equation.
“As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow ever higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace,” so says the logline. “But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he’s found with the woman he loves.”
While Safran didn’t say exactly when folks could expect Mister Miracle to grace their TVs, he did reveal that it, alongside other shows like Creature Commandos season two, My Adventures with Green Lantern, Starfire, and DC Superpowers, are in an “advanced” state of development. Other DC Studios animated projects like the Joker anime are in early development.
“Those are all creatively way down the road. So, we’re really excited because we love animation, we love the art form and the fact that we’re going to have such a robust slate coming out is fantastic.”
