Much Like Evil, The Spooky-Kid Horror Movie Will Never Die

In Before I Wake, parents (Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane) still grieving the loss of their young son decide to foster an adorable boy who’d be a perfect li’l angel (“He likes butterflies!”) if only he didn’t have such horrifying nightmares that come true. Yo kid, don’t peek under the bed!

Before I Wake may feel a little familiar; beyond the spooky kid, for instance, we have yet another iteration of A Concerned Party visiting Someone From The Past to get The Truth. (And that person is locked up, as they always are, in what appears to be a psychiatric hospital, apparently suffering from an overload of helpful/cautionary exposition.)

But in its favor, it’s got a promising pedigree: director and co-writer Mike Flanagan also made Oculus and the genuinely scary indie Absentia.

Before I Wake is out May 8, aka the catch-your-breath weekend between The Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1) and Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15).
