Now that the Mortal Kombat: Legacy webseries has become a huge hit, and the latest MK game has sold 3 million copies, Warner Bros. and New Line have greenlit a new Mortal Kombat film — which everybody is helping will make you forget the 1990s outings.

Kevin Tancharoen, who created the original Internet-breaking Mortal Kombat YouTube short as well as the Legacy webseries, has been tasked with directing this new movie — which won’t necessarily tie in with the digital stuff he’s created so far, or feature the same actors. But Tancharoen, talking to Entertainment Weekly, does promise it’ll be insane and violent:

Up to this point, we’ve only been talking ‘rated R.’ I like realistic takes on things, I like it when it’s a little darker and grittier. And I want the martial arts to feel real as opposed to balletic and super-choreographed. It needs to feel brutal, because that’s the nature of the video game itself.

Hopefully that means lots of one-handed decapitations are in our future. Can’t wait! [EW]
