Musicians and musician-wannabes *raises hand* all fell for the Tenori-On musical synthesizer a couple of years ago, but were put off by its $1,200 price-tag. If you own an iPhone or iPad though, cough up £12/$19 for the app version instead.

The TNR-i from Yamaha might not have the full features of the actual Tenori-On, nor warrant you as much superstardom geek cred in the music while on stage, but at least you can dabble with making synthesized beats and loops using the 16 x 16 grid of buttons.
