Obama helps good old friend Apple

President Obama has vetoed a ban on Apple products after losing a patent battle to Samsung. Is this a favor between old friends?

Apple has long been a Democrat Party and Obama supporter. Apple's founder Steve Jobs personally helped Obama in his 2012 re-election campaign, while Bill Clinton reportedly sought Jobs advice on the Monica Lewinsky scandal, among many other things.

The official explanation for the veto on the ban by the International Trade Commission, according to U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, is that patent holders such as Samsung 'could harm consumers and competitive conditions in the U.S. economy.' This is a surprising reason, given that US courts have upheld product bans based on similar patent claims—some favoring Apple against Samsung. In fact, patent hogs damage the US economy regularly. Why the change of criteria now? Why veto this product ban and no other similar bans?
