Universal has signed on to become the studio to fund and release Matt Damon‘s Philip K Dick adaptation Adjustment Bureau, but the movie itself may be the least interesting thing about the deal.
We told you about Adjustment Bureau this weekend, the movie that Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean’s Thirteen screenwriter George Nolfi is adapting from Dick’s short story “Adjustment Team”, but it was only yesterday that the deal with Universal was announced. Even though we’re looking forward to seeing what Nolfi and Damon come up with from Dick’s original idea of a man who discovers that his entire life is a lie – Well, it is a Philip K. Dick story – the movers and shakers in Hollywood may be more interested in the terms of the deal.

Not only did Universal have to sign up for a project with writer, director and star already attached, but so was the budget for the movie ($62 million), and the unusual – for movies, at least – clause that Universal only gets the movie for 20 years, after which all rights revert back to the production company, Nolfi and Damon. It wasn’t all win for Nolfi, however; in order to get the rights reversal, he had to give up final cut on the movie as well as allow the studio “creative input” on major decisions… but give his good relationship with the studio on Bourne, that’s unlikely to be that much of a problem, unless Universal suddenly calls for Megan Fox to play Damon’s wife or something similarly unlikely.
Adjustment Bureau is aimed for a 2010 release.
