With a team of over 700 visual effects artists and other on-set crew working in studios around the world, the Moving Picture Company produced 1,200 shots for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, including bringing to life—or afterlife—ghostly great white sharks.
MPC was just one of over 14 different visual effects and post-production studios that helped create many of the movie’s characters, including Captain Salazar and his crew, who were cursed to spend an eternity perpetually drowning and burning as they sought out revenge on Jack Sparrow.
At this point, the post-production teams working on blockbuster summer movies are outgrowing the on-set personnel needed to actually shoot these films. It’s inevitable that one day, as computer graphics and visual effects creep closer and closer to recreating reality, these before and after breakdowns showing the transformation of actors and performers simply won’t exist anymore. We’ll miss them.
