Start crying, Nokia, because Sony’s showing off a concept design for its new PlayStation Portable, and it looks like it is going to put everything that’s come before it to shame. Here’s the scoop: It will have a 4.5-inch, 480×272 pixel widescreen display, built-in 802.11b, 7.1 channel Dolby surround sound, and maybe even cellphone capabilities, play video and MP3 files, and will use special 2.4-inch, 1.8GB “Universal Media Discs.” Sony exec Ken Kutargi emphasizes that the final product will look different than the concept image, and that the PSP won’t be just one device, but a system of related devices depending on what consumers want to do with theirs.
Also, Sony claims they’ll be coming out with a $60 competitor to the iPod next year, which we’ll have to see to believe.
