HDTV not sharp enough for you? The world’s third-largest LCD flat-panel supplier, Chi Mei Optoelectronics of Taiwan, developed a 56-inch flat panel display capable of resolution that’s four times higher than garden-variety HDTV. Quad Full High Definition (QFHD) is the next step in high-rez display technology, and this 56-inch flat panel can handle it, cranking out 3840 x 2160 pixels of ultra-high-definition goodness.

For now, such displays could be used in high-end applications such as displaying ultra-high resolution satellite pictures or medical video. This technology represents a remarkable achievement, where that 4x increase in screen resolution requires 24.8 million transistors and data coursing through its electronic veins at a speedy 1.4 GB per second. Good luck finding native content to watch on this thing, or even a fast-enough playback device—but still, it’s a fascinating peek into the future of vid-life after HDTV. Chi Mei will be demonstrating the display at CeBit next month.
