We found it somewhat surprising that Sony was working on an iPod speaker system. Too bad it generally sucks. Such is the opinion of the overlords over at iLounge, which has the first review of the CPF-iP001 Cradle Audio. That’s not to say that it’s a total waste of money. The 2.1-channel speakers produce “acceptable” sound, but you wonder whether or not that’s worth $250. The remote control is another highlight. But yes, counting a remote control as a highlight must indicate that there’s something wrong here. And there is.

First, the Cradle Audio is essentially a carbon copy of a cellphone dock that Sony made last year; all that was changed was the connector. I want my iPod docks to look like iPod docks, thank you very much. (And so did the reviewer.) Back to the price: it’s simply too much. For less than half of what Sony wants, you can grab better sounding JBL iPod systems. To top it all off, you can’t even use it a a dock to transfer songs to and from your computer. Why are we spending $250 again?

So the Cradle Audio is fairly disappointing. Its significance lies in the fact that Sony is finally jumping onboard the iPod accessory bandwagon. So if buying things with the SONY logo is important to you, then by all means go for it. Just know that for much less coin you can find better sounding, better functioning alternatives.
