One of London’s most famous icons got retired in 2005 to international dismay—the Routemaster bus. Seen on the roads since 1956, they were replaced by bendy-buses that almost everyone despises. Until now! Meet the new Routemaster.

London’s mayor Boris Johnson unveiled “the new bus” today, promising they’ll hit the streets by 2012. They’ll use less fuel, have better ventilation, and will “use the latest green technology” according to Transport For London. Exactly which green technology hasn’t been confirmed.

The double-decker behemoths will also include an open rear so people can jump on and off easily—though presumably they’ll be on the look-out for fare-dodgers. [London.gov.uk via Londonist]
