The Financial Times is reporting that Nokia is, unfathomably, working on a large-screened smartphone whose size will rival that of Samsung's Galaxy Note series.

Sources have told the FT that the new large "5- to 6-inch" phone will form part of Nokia's Lumia range. Also to join that range, according to the sources, is a a lighter "more advanced" Lumia, codenamed Catwalk. There are, sadly, not further details to be had. What we can say, though, is that the latter sounds promising; the former sounds like a disappointment waiting to happen.

Pictures of a phone purporting to be the Catwalk have also hit the web overnight. Whether or not the pictured device is genuine is up for grabs, but WPCentral claims that the aluminum-bodied device is 2oz lighter and 2mm thinner than the current Lumia 920. The leaked picture certainly shows off the same shape as the current Lumia range.

Rumors swirled earlier this year suggesting that Nokia is to release a full-on PureView camera in the coming months, and a source speaking the FT reiterated them. If both sets of rumors are to be believed, they suggest that Nokia is pushing hard to radically revamp its smartphone offering—even if that does mean including a phone for people with giant hands. It'll be interesting to see if that turns out to be the case. [Financial Times, WPCentral]

People with giant hands sure do like to buy phones, though. You might not like it personally, and that's fine, but you can't deny the success of the Galaxy Note. It's not unfathomable for Nokia to entertain the idea of a Note competitor.

I'm just dying to see the Catwalk, as I'm not sure how one can conceivably make a prettier phone than the Lumia 920.
