I always get nervous when someone tries to sell me a piece of consumer electronics as an ‘investment’. Generally that means it is going to be spectacularly expensive today, and will proceed to depreciate rapidly for the next few years, at which point the item will either be obsolete and off the market, or selling brand new for a tenth of what I paid for it. Not a very smart investment—I guess that’s why Best Buy salespeople are Best Buy salespeople and not financial advisors.
Anyway, ExtremeTech reviews a relatively new ‘investment’ piece: Samsung’s 50-inch HDTV, model HL-P5063W. It’s a pretty hot little (well, big) home theatre component, with TI’s new HD3 DLP (Digital Light Processor) and a native 1280 by 720 display. ExtremeTech seems reasonably impressed with the results of their in-depth testing, but then again it should be almost impossible for a $3,500 TV to suck. Bear in mind, too, that this is a bargain HDTV. I guess that makes me a tightass.
