Samsung has developed a new CRT monitor that’s only 35cm deep, addressing one of the major complaints that CRT detractors have: their ridiculous size compared to LCDs. While 35cm is still fairly thick by modern flat-panel standards, it’s a lot better than older technologies (I have some ancient 21″ Trinitons that I use every day that are almost two feet thick from front to back).
Samsung plans to start small-yield production soon, then move on to volume manufacturing throughout 2005. The first design is a $1,000 32-inch model (they’re aiming at the TV market initially, not the computer display market) but they do plan to keep increasing in size as they work out the kinks. This isn’t just a minor aside for Samsung—they’re planning on taking on the LCD and Plasma market.
