For more than a decade, San Francisco’s iconic Yahoo! sign has stood tall as a symbol of the internet, through boom and bust. Now it’s gone for good.

Back in November we reported that the board was going to become available for others to advertise on by the end of 2012. Now, that day has come. This picture shows the sign being dismantled, a result of Yahoo! pulling out of the advertising contract.

Currently there’s no word on who will replace Yahoo! on the billboard. Regardless, a reminder of the internet’s pubescent years is gone for good. How sad. [SFGate; Image: Michael Macor / The Chronicle]
