So when Valence is pushing their version of Lithium-ion batteries, called ‘Saphion,’ they market the old fashioned way: by showing their competitor blowing up. Apparently, the new phosphates-based Lithium-ion tech of Saphion makes batteries that don’t explode when punctured or dented (something that the current LiCoO2 “oxygen-liberating” ones do, which can be a major pain for people that use in them in high-impact situations, like radio-controlled plane operation). Plus they’re able to receive a good number of a recharge cycles, are environmentally friendly (no heavy metals, at least), and can be fashioned into a variety of shapes and forms. Looks like the exploding cell phone could be a thing of the past (and you should watch the video of the exploding cobalt-oxide-based LIon batteries and imagine one that size blowing up next to your face). (Thanks, Chris!)
