I'm guessing one problem with the single line idea is it takes too much floor space, which is at a premium.

Our local Borders uses the one line concept and it actually takes up very little space, but then the customers don't have shopping carts.

Using one line at Wal*Mart probably wouldn't work very well since it'd be so long, shoppers are transporting more goods in carts and typically are not singles (they have other shoppers with them).
