Sebastian Stan’s run through the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been wild. From best friend to sworn enemy, super soldier to Congressman, few characters have been as prolific or flexible in the saga. And though he shared the spotlight in a TV series, he’s never had his own solo movie. Which, apparently, is something the actor tried to change at one point.
Speaking to Vulture, Stan revealed that at one point he “half-jokingly pitched a ‘Sicario-esque‘ Winter Soldier spinoff film to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.” “We keep a real small budget,” Stan said. “It’s about a guy who thinks he recognizes someone from his past that had something to do with when, you know, he was brainwashed, and he gets obsessed with this person. He goes on a whole journey to try to figure out who this person is. It’s a thriller.” According to the actor, Feige responded by saying, “Yeah, that sounds cool!”
Which, Stan knows, was a polite Hollywood blow-off. It’s not happening, nor was the pitch particularly serious by any means, especially at a time when the Marvel Cinematic Universe is focusing on less output than usual. Plus, don’t forget Stan’s character is currently one of the leaders of the New Avengers, so he’s already got a pretty interesting storyline happening there. Presumably, Doctor Doom is too big of a threat for the New Avengers to take on. Will his character factor into whatever the next iteration of the Avengers is? Time will tell.
And, of course, there’s that little matter of Stan putting on a new hat as a member of DC Studios with a role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II. So even if Bucky Barnes isn’t getting his own solo film, Stan himself is doing just fine. We’ll next see him in Avengers: Doomsday in December and, potentially, Secret Wars the year after.
