Wireless cameras might be old hat, but the new S2 from Smartvue looks like it might outclass them all. Running on the not-yet-standardized 802.11n, er, standard, the S2 will capture directly to MPEG using Pixim’s Digital Pixel System technology for high quality images with broad dynamic range. Smartvue claims that the S2 will perform as well as cabled cameras with the freedom of wireless, which is likely to appeal to those who have tried to use traditional 802.11b cameras for full-motion captures—at least in my experience, you aren’t going to get 30fps on Wi-Fi. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the S2, however, it its ability to stream video to your phone for surveillance on-the-go. Not exactly sure how that’s going to work, but presumably this functionality is through the base station DVR (included) rather than the camera itself. Should be available in first quarter 2005.
